HOMESafety in the mountains

Safety in the mountains

Numerous people look for relaxation and adventure while hiking and climbing in the Alps. Not everybody has the expertise, the experience or the knowledge to recognize dangers in the mountains. Here you will find some tips for your holidays:

Equipment

Sturdy nonslip hiking boots secure the foot and increase sure-footedness. Hiking poles make the descent and ascent easier. You should always carry a warm jacket as well as rain and sun protection, a first-aid pack and a mobile phone (Euro emergency number: 112, mountain rescue service: 140 ). Please also remember to take something to drink and eat with you while out and about.

Weather

The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Rain, wind and cold can increase the accident risk. Please always consider the weather forecast before planning a hike.

Mountain rescue service APP

In Tirol the mountain rescue service and the government have released a new smartphone APP. With this APP help can be called fast and there will be no long search for accident victims for the mountain rescue service and the helicopter. This is a unique service in Austria to pinpoint victims faster. It is a “mute” emergency system to alarm the control station which will then locate the victim via GPS.
