Autumn cacation in the Zillertal: hiking, culinary delights and spa
The best time for hiking in Tyrol
Autumn hiking
350 kilometres of hiking trails, golden mountain slopes and endless views: While the cattle drive is celebrated down in the Zillertal valley, peaceful trails above lead to quiet peaks and through the breathtaking autumn scenery of Tux.
Many summer mountain cable cars continue to take hikers comfortably into the mountains well into October, while the new ski season begins at the Hintertux Glacier. An autumn holiday in Tyrol combines the best of both worlds: scenic hikes, the first days on skis, relaxing rounds of golf and soothing spa moments.

Hikes in the Zillertal in autumn
Out hiking tour recommendations
Is this the best time of year for hiking? Many people say yes. Because when the air grows clearer, the sun sits lower in the sky, and the mountains are bathed in warm light. Fewer crowds, better views, and ideal temperatures make the Tyrolean autumn perfect for long mountain hikes and leisurely walks through the alpine pastures. Here are three beautiful hikes we’d like to recommend:
Bichlalm
From the town center in Hintertux, head toward the Alpenbad Hotel Hohenhaus (House No. 774); there, turn right and follow the road past the Windegg (House No. 748), Fernerblick (House No. 744), and Christina (House No. 740) houses until you reach the fork in the road. Turn left there and continue along the forest road (Trail No. 17) to the Bichlalm. Ascend on the wide, easy trail to the Bichlalm. Descend on Trail No. 15 toward the glacier cable car valley station, and then continue on Trail No. 11 back to the starting point.
Difficulty: easy
Mountain hut stop: Bichlalm
(open until mid- to late October)
Highlights: terrace, playground, and petting zoo
Brandalm
You’ll start right at Private Homes Tuxerhof, across from the Maria-Hilf Chapel in Vorderlanersbach. Follow the wide, well-marked hiking trail No. 10 along the Tuxbach stream. From Lanersbach, pass by the Hotel Jäger (House No. 480), then ascend on Trail No. 21 across the stream, and continue on the road to the Brandhof (House No. 562). Turn right, walk between the house and the barn, stay on Trail No. 23 until it branches off to the right and leads up a steeper final stretch to the Brandalm. Return via Farm Road No. 33, descending to Juns or
Tux-Lanersbach.
Difficulty: moderate
Mountain hut stop: Brandalm
(open until the end of October)
Schrofenalm
Start by turning left in front of the hotel and heading up the road toward Schöneben; at the first intersection, turn right and head uphill over the bridge onto Trail No. 55. You’ll pass the “Stockbauer” (House No. 40) and follow the forest trail, which leads through sparse woodlands and across alpine meadows. The trail climbs steadily, following hiking paths that are sometimes wider and sometimes narrower, all the way to the Schrofenalm. The alpine pasture is situated on a sunny high plateau with a view of the valley and is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a snack along the way.
Difficulty: moderate to difficult
Highlights: St. Barbara Chapel and a swing chair with a panoramic view
