Hiking vacation in the Zillertal
The best way to experience Tyrol

The hiking hotel in Tux

Wanderlust

350 kilometers of hiking trails and a valley that lies higher than the rest of the Zillertal. The Tuxerhof is the ideal base for a hiking vacation in Tux. Leisurely valley walks along the Tuxbach stream, high-altitude trails to rustic alpine huts, and paths up the Rastkogel with a three-valley view spanning the Inn, Tux, and Zillertal valleys - every tour has its own unique character. And for those who want to start right at the top: summer cable cars, a free hiking bus, and hiking taxis take care of the initial ascent.

Hikes with stops at mountain huts in the Zillertal Alps

Hiking and having a break at a hut

Everything tastes better after a hike. That’s not just my imagination - it’s based on experience. Here are three recommendations for hikes to mountain huts in the Tux Valley:

Höllenstein-Hütte & Grieralm

After the bridge, turn left and head uphill on the access road until you reach house no. 509. From there, continue on the gravel road (Trail No. 28) until the old mule trail crosses the path. The entire hike to the Höllensteinhütte (1,740 m) takes about 1.5 hours. Stay on the wide alpine trail. 900 m past the wide hairpin turn, the hiking trail branches off to the left through the forest and up to the Tapeneck (1,830 m). Passing the idyllic little Griersee, the Grieralm comes into view. From the hut, the well-marked Trail No. 22 leads down via the Tulferalm (1,700 m) to Madseit. Either cross the suspension bridge and then turn right toward the valley, or walk along the edge of the forest to the Nösslauhof (708) and then take Trail No. 12 to the bus stop.

  • Round trip: 4 h
  • Elevation gain: 650 m
  • Difficulty: moderate

The Tux mountain peaks in the first light of day

Sunrise hike

While the valley is still asleep, we’re already up there. The Hintertux Glacier in the first light of day, the silence before dawn, a cup of tea in hand. The sunrise hike is one of those moments you’ll never forget in the Tux Valley.

  • Starting in July, weather permitting
  • As part of the Tuxerhof weekly program
  • Tour selection depends on weather conditions and the forecast

Hiking in the Zillertal from spring to fall

Just set off

From June through October, the Tux Valley offers everything to make a hiker’s heart beat faster: panoramic views of 3,000-meter peaks, expansive alpine pastures, guided tours with local guides, and classic trails like the Berliner Höhenweg or the Peter Habeler Runde.

The Zillertal Aktivcard—available directly at the Tuxerhof reception desk—provides free mountain railway rides and numerous benefits in the region.

When you return in the evening, you’ll have truly earned a wellness session at the Tuxerhof, and at the Alpin Spa, you’ll find exactly what your tired legs and busy minds need.

Hikes in the Zillertal for experienced mountaineers

Mountain climbing in the Tux Valley

Want to go higher? The Tux Valley and the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park offer experienced mountaineers a vast area: 422 km², ranging from 1,000 meters in Ginzling up to 3,509 meters on the Hochfeiler - with countless routes, variations, and peaks that make the climb well worth it. Here are three mountain hikes we’d like to recommend:

Take the gondola from Hintertux up to the Sommerbergalm (2,100 m), the starting point of the hike. Alpine roses, St. John’s wort, and wild gentian provide a lovely contrast to the massive glacier, where imposing mountain peaks vie for the viewer’s attention. Once you reach the Kaiserscharte, on a clear day the view extends all the way to the Ötztal and Stubai Alps. Far below lies the village of Schmirn, to which Hintertux belonged administratively until 1926. On the other side, toward the Tuxer Joch, a lovely alpine pasture landscape opens up. At the Tuxer Joch House, it’s time for a refreshment break before descending leisurely through the Weitental valley, past the Schleierwaterfall, to Hintertux.

Key facts: Round trip 5 h | Elevation gain 545 m | Tip: Don’t forget your camera and binoculars!

From Lanersbach, take the hiking taxi to the Vallruckalm, where the ascent to the Hippoldspitze begins. You’ll visit the highest alpine pasture in the Zillertal, which has its own small power plant, accompanied by an unparalleled view of the Karwendel Mountains and the Zillertal Alps. The descent follows the same route or, alternatively, goes via the Nederjoch to the Nasse-Tux-Alm and back to Lanersbach.

From Tux-Lanersbach, take the Eggalmbahn cable car for a leisurely ride up to 2,000 meters. From there, the trail winds its way up to the Beil (2,300 m) and continues with a gentle ascent to the summit cross of the Grüblspitze (2,395 m). A feast for all the senses: panoramic views of the glacier, fragrant herb meadows, and the chirping of crickets set the tone. Hikers in good physical condition can also visit the Torsee, a beautiful mountain lake nestled in nature, to cool off and relax their tired legs.

Key facts: Round trip 7 h | Elevation gain 766 m | Tip: Take a detour to the historic farms of Gemais
