Alternative activities

Winter holidays in Tux are about much more than just skiing

Everyone knows that the Hintertux Glacier and the Ski- & Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 offer some of the best skiing anywhere in the Alps.

However, there is much more to a winter holiday at the Tuxerhof than "just" skiing and snowboarding. In the Tuxertal Valley there are lots of alternative activities for visitors of all ages keen to try something a little different.

Cross-country skiing

Open-air workout in the Tuxertal Valley

Cross-country skiing is an experience not to be missed. This popular sport is a real open-air workout and trains not only all of the main muscle groups but also the cardiovascular system. There really is no feeling like gliding through the forest as you listen to the sound of silence.

The region around the Tuxerhof has 30 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails for all abilities.

  • 14 km classic trail fromTux-Vorderlanersbach to Madseit
  • 14 km skating trail in Juns/Madseit and 2 km high-alpine trail near the Höllensteinhütte
Mountain huts

Sunny location, hearty food and good company

Skiing is hungry work! That's why it's a good idea to stop every now and then to rest, re-charge your batteries and fill up the tank. There is no better place to do this than at one of the mountain huts in the resort serving hearty local food.

No day on the slopes would be complete without a stop at one of the resort's traditional wooden huts.

Ice skating

Magical winter experience in Lanersbach

Ice skating is the most peaceful winter activity and ideal for all the family. No matter if you are a budding pro with perfect balance or a total beginner taking your first tentative steps, the open-air ice rink in Lanersbach is the right place for a fun and relaxing skating session.

Ice skates can be hired on site. There are generally plenty of experienced skaters around to give you a few pointers and tips on how to improve your technique.

Snowshoe adventures

Walking in a winter wonderland

Skis certainly aren't the only way to get out into nature and explore the wonders of winter. Snowshoe hikes are great for all ages and give visitors the chance to swap the hustle and bustle of the pistes for a more peaceful experience.

Up, down, left or right – wherever you are headed, the great thing about snowshoe walking is that you are almost always on your own. You might even find a valley off the beaten track with only the local wildlife for company.

All the equipment needed for snowshoe walking can be rented. We recommend also hiring a local guide for the best possible experience.

Tobogganing

A cosy hut followed by a thrilling descent

Many people don't know this, but the sport of tobogganing is actually even older than skiing.

Competitions have been held since the 19th century, and the fascination of this sport continues today.

Visitors staying at the Tuxerhof can look forward to an action-packed adventure on one of the local toboggan runs.

There are three runs in the area around the hotel. All of them have a cosy hut at the top of the run (Bichlalm, Grieralm, Höllensteinhütte) where you can also hire a toboggan. After a hearty meal it is time to clamber aboard and whizz back down into the valley!

There are three floodlit toboggan runs in Tux where visitors can experience the thrill of night tobogganing!
